Why is it important for people with diabetes to see a podiatrist?

If you have diabetes, regardless of whether you take pills or insulin, it is important to have your feet checked by a diabetes podiatrist. People with diabetes can develop neuropathy which is burning, tingling, or numbness to the feet.  If you have diabetes with neuropathy you can have open sores on your feet and not even realize it.  You may also have a weakened immune systems if you have diabetes and you are at an increased risk of developing infections.  Having a podiatrist check your feet for wounds, evaluate nerve sensation and assess circulation are all very important factors for prevention of infection.  If you have diabetes and haven’t seen a podiatrist yet don’t hesitate to call Advanced Podiatry for  an evaluation of your feet.
