Can wearing the “wrong” shoes cause Achilles pain, tampa podiatrist says “Absolutely!”

If you are experiencing pain, redness, or swelling to the back of your ankle at the Achilles tendon, you may have Achilles tendinitis.  Patients that suffer with Achilles tendinitis, which is inflammation of the Achilles tendon, often say certain shoes that rub against the tendon will worsen their pain.  Not only does rubbing cause worsening symptoms of Achilles tendinitis but certain types of shoes can too!

Flat, non-supportive sandals and flip flops are some of the worst shoes to wear if you suffer from Achilles tendinitis.  Abnormal walking patterns or instability from shoes can not only worsen Achilles tendinitis but can be the main cause for it!  Although it may be a surprise to some of you, shoes with a small, firm heel wedge can actually relieve tension from the Achilles tendon and reduce painful symptoms.  You can even incorporate a heel wedge into shoes you already own to reduce tension to the tendon rather than throwing away your favorite shoes.

So call Advanced Podiatry and make an appointment so we can further help you with your Achilles pain and get you back to a pain-free, active lifestyle again!
