Heel pain can keep you from running in the Gasparilla race if it is not quickly treated. Heel pain is most commonly caused by plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissue, similar to a ligament, that spans the bottom of the foot. It helps to stabilize the arch. When the plantar fascia becomes inflamed, you will start experiencing heel pain where the plantar fascia inserts on the heel bone. This inflammation can cause sharp, stabbing pain in the heel. Pain is most severe after you have been resting and you attempt to get back up to walk. Pain can also occur when stepping out of bed in the morning. Sometimes the pain will temporarily stop as you continue to walk, but may quickly return if you sit for too long. Plantar fasciitis can seriously keep runners off their feet. If not treated quickly, the pain will become more consistent and chronic in nature. Many runners suffer from heel pain for months or years before they come to a podiatrist for treatment. DON’T WAIT FOR HEEL PAIN THAT DOESN’T RESOLVE! If you are experiencing heel pain that continues to occur with certain activities or shoes for greater than 2 weeks, then you need to seek professional help from your local podiatrist. Stretching the plantar fascia, icing, and using anti-inflammatories should be initiated immediately; however, if pain is persisting with this treatment regimen, then your podiatrist will need to incorporate other treatments into your routine. Custom orthotics are an excellent way to improve plantar fasciitis. Custom orthotics are insoles made just for your foot! They can easily be made in our office and worn immediately to help eliminate your plantar fasciitis pain. So if you’re suffering from heel pain that is not getting better, then don’t wait to call Advanced Podiatry at 813-875-0555 for an appointment.
