Can athlete’s foot cause toenail fungus?

Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that occurs on the bottom of the foot and between the toes in the webspaces.  It can present as dry, scaling skin or burning, itchy blisters.  The most common fungus that causes athlete’s foot is the same fungus that causes fungal infections in toenails.  Prolonged cases of  athlete’s foot  can cause  fungal toenails.
