Do you have discolored or ugly toenails? It’s getting closer to spring, and it’s the perfect time to fix those toenails before sandal season is in full effect! Thickened, discolored or “ugly” toenails are usually caused by a fungal infection. Fungus is everywhere, in the air and on your skin. If a toenail is susceptible to a fungal infection, you may notice yellow, white or brownish discoloration. You may also noticed excess skin or “debris” around the skin or under the nail. Does the nail appear to be lifting at the very end making it loose? That could be a sign of a fungal infection too! The earlier you identify these findings of a fungal infection, the better your outcome could be with treatment! Don’t wait for years and years before you decide to have your toenails looked at by a podiatrist. Come to our office for an evaluation when you notice changes starting to occur to your toenail! Advanced Podiatry has several treatment options available to resolve your toenail issues! I’ve listed a few of the treatments below but to best identify which one is for you, call our office for an appointment with the doctors at Advanced Podiatry.
- Topical antifungal medications- This type of treatment could work for a mild case of toenail fungus depending on how much of the nail is involved. Topical treatments that are prescription strength have a better outcome than the home remedies (i.e. vinegar soaks and Vicks Vapor rub). But don’t rely on these for complete resolution! They’re usually used as an adjunct therapy.
- Kery-Flex– This is a great option for someone that is looking for a quick way to cover up that ugly toenail while your treating it simultaneously! Kery-Flex is a synthetic nail that is placed over your own toenail that makes the appearance of the nail look like a regular toenail. It also has antifungal properties within the Kery-Flex that help eliminate fungal infection as well.
- Finally, toenail Laser treatments are available. It is the most effective treatment, by far, when comparing treatments to resolve ugly toenails. Laser treatments kill the spores produced by fungus and allow the new, healthy nail to regrow. Multiple treatments are usually performed to increase the success of growing a healthy toenail. Advanced Podiatry has developed a protocol unlike any other in the Tampa Bay area that has greatly increased the success our patients have with resolving toenail fungus!
These are just a few of the main treatments we offer at Advanced Podiatry. You’ll see when you have a consultation that multiple treatments can be used and adjunct natural treatment we offer can enhance the effects of your treatment.
