Maksim Chmerkovskiy danced his way into the operating room recently after suffering a torn calf muscle during rehearsal. The Dancing With the Stars veteran was rehearsing when all of a sudden he felt a pop in his calf. He screamed out, “….It just feels like something hit it!” Maksim underwent surgery to repair the right calf muscle last week and is currently undergoing physical therapy. He posted a video on his instagram @maksimc three days after surgery showing that he has not lost any of his moves.
A calf muscle injury can be a very serious problem and should not be taken lightly. The calf muscle is made up of two separate muscles called the soleus and the gastrocnemius. The two muscles blend together at the heel to form the very powerful Achille’s tendon. The Achille’s tendon is the most powerful tendon in the human body and therefore generates high amounts of force. Maksim’s injury could have been at the level of the Achilles or higher up in the actual muscle belly. Either way the surgeon would have to suture the tear back together in order to preserve proper function of the leg. If Maksim was already walking three days after surgery then most likely the muscle belly was involved. This area is highly vascularized and may not require complete non-weight bearing to heal. Complete healing of this injury may take several weeks depending on his progress during physical therapy. Meanwhile he will just have to see how his leg feels over the next few weeks.
