LeBron James suffered a high ankle sprain in late March while playing the Atlanta Hawks. What does this mean for the rest of the Lakers season? Will he be back in time to compete in the NBA playoffs? Let’s discuss the injury in more detail.
While chasing a loose ball, James suffered an injury and was diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. High ankle sprains occur at the lower tibiofibular ligament different from traditional ankle sprains which occur at the talofibular ligament. These ligaments provide stabilization surrounding the ankle joint complex to prevent excessive abnormal motion. Initial evaluation of the injury typically consists of clinical exam as well as x-rays which rule in or out any associated fracture while MRI evaluates for soft tissue injury. The extent of the injury, which can range from a stretched, partially or completely torn ligament, then determines the treatment protocol based on clinical evaluation and above imaging. Some ankle sprains can take a minimum of 6-8 weeks for a full recovery. Hopefully for Lebron and the Lakers, his recovery is expedited as playoffs are right around the corner.
